1959 Series II SWB Land Rover, QLD NRU-409
The photo shows a 1959 Short Wheel Base
(88 inch) Series II hardtop Land Rover, with
Queensland registration, NRU-409, in the water
at Blacks Beach near Mackay, in 1966.
The vehicle came standard with no indicators, no radio,
and no heater.
The 4 speed manual gearbox had no synchromesh on
first and second gears.
Tyres were 700 x 16. The standard size was 650 x 16.
(The rims were changed in 1969 to take 750x 16 tyres ).
The vehicle was purchased second-hand from Annand & Thompson
(now Austral Land Rover) at Breakfast Creek Road, Newstead, in Brisbane.
The hardtop originally had a white roof (see second photo ), but I painted
the whole vehicle 'army green' in late 1965, so you see a green roof in the
1966 photo.
The painting was done by hand using a paint brush, and only cost about
$50 for the paint, which came in 2 tins of Dulux "Deep Bronze Green".
(I re-painted the Land Rover again in 1969 using the same method of painting ).

The tyres are now 750x16, and the number plate has changed to 49- 267.
The spare wheel has been mounted on the back, instead of on the bonnet ( hood ).
