Australia-The Land Down Under: a new "Multiply" group

All MSN Groups are closing down in February 2009, so the Australian
group Australia-The Land Down Under has been transferred to the new
Multiply site at this address -

Microsoft will not be hosting any groups after Feb. 2009.

Another group, "The Year 1945 Interest Group" which
covers events and pictures from 1945, has also been
moved from MSN to "Multiply", and can be found here -

View of Smith St. Darwin, 1969.

This photo of Smith Street in Darwin was taken in 1969.

On the right is Cashmans store and newsagency, and just down from that is
    the Star picture theatre.
The Australian movie "Jedda" premiered at the Star theatre in January 1955.

The Siesta Motel can be seen directly opposite Cashmans store and newsagency.

The building with the blue sign on the roof is the Victoria Hotel.

The bank on the left was originally the Commercial Bank of Australia.

Many of the buildings seen here were destroyed by cyclone Tracy in 1974.

The next picture also shows Smith Street in 1969, from the other side of the road.
The photo was taken by Alan Darlison.
Cashmans store can be seen on the left-hand side in the far distance.

This photo was taken from further down, on the opposite side, and shows a Morris Mini
in the middle of the road heading towards the Harbour end of the street, and a Mini Moke
    heading in the opposite direction.
A Land Rover can be seen parked on the left.
The registration number of the Mini is NT  52-013.

1959 Series II SWB Land Rover, QLD NRU-409

The photo shows a 1959 Short Wheel Base
(88 inch) Series II hardtop Land Rover, with
Queensland registration, NRU-409, in the water
at Blacks Beach near Mackay, in 1966.

The vehicle came standard with no indicators, no radio,
    and no heater.

The 4 speed manual gearbox had no synchromesh on
    first and second gears.

    Tyres were 700 x 16.  The standard size was 650 x 16.
(The rims were changed in 1969 to take 750x 16 tyres ).

The vehicle was purchased second-hand from Annand & Thompson
(now Austral Land Rover) at Breakfast Creek Road, Newstead, in Brisbane.

The hardtop originally had a white roof (see second photo ), but I painted
the whole vehicle 'army green' in late 1965, so you see a green roof in the
    1966 photo.
The painting was done by hand using a paint brush, and only cost about
$50 for the paint, which came in 2 tins of Dulux "Deep Bronze Green".

(I re-painted the Land Rover again in 1969 using the same method of painting ).

The next photo is a rear view of the Land Rover on the Cox Peninsula Road,
    near Darwin, in 1969.
The tyres are now 750x16, and the number plate has changed to 49- 267.
The spare wheel has been mounted on the back, instead of on the bonnet ( hood ).
